Makeup Was Never Just Makeup
For decades, skincare stopped at sunscreen. You cleansed, treated, moisturized, protected. Then came makeup — as if it belonged to a different story. Something playful, maybe, but never purposeful.
But here’s the truth: skin health doesn’t end when the foundation goes on. And beauty isn’t separate from science. That gap between skincare and makeup, between wellness and expression, never made sense to us.
At Salmalita, we believe your skin deserves more than just protection. It deserves pigment, power, and joy. It deserves to be seen, celebrated, and supported all at once. By formulas made with intention. By people who actually understand skin.
We created Salmalita to bridge the space where most brands fall silent. Between skincare and color. Between science and soul. Between how you care for your skin and how you show it to the world.
Because skincare isn’t a checklist. And makeup isn’t a mask. They’re both expressions of care. And that care should never require compromise.
The Problem We Had to Solve
Makeup and skincare have always been treated like separate worlds. Dermatology rarely touched color cosmetics, and beauty brands rarely cared about skin health. One side dismissed the other. And in between were real people — layering makeup on active acne, skipping sunscreen to avoid pilling, wondering why "clean" products still caused breakouts.
Too often, makeup was created without dermatologic insight. And too often, skincare brands treated makeup like an afterthought, or worse, a threat. There was no bridge between the two — no shared language. And in that silence, a whole population of people were left without products that fully understood them.
Worse, much of that makeup wasn’t made with every kind of skin in mind. Undertones were misunderstood. Sensitive skin was ignored. Texture wasn’t accounted for. And too often, people with deeper skin tones or nontraditional gender expression were forced to experiment in silence, never quite sure if a product would work or even belong to them.
We saw it every day. In clinic. In community. On ourselves.
So we asked: what if the future of skin health didn’t end at the medicine cabinet?
What if the next evolution of skincare lived right where makeup begins?
Salmalita was born from that question — and the belief that your skin doesn’t have to compromise to express itself.
Meet the Founders
Salmalita didn’t begin in a boardroom. It started in a Chicago apartment in 2008 — with a random introduction, a shared love of beauty, and two people searching for something more.
Omer Ibrahim was a young medical researcher. Rollie Ronquillo was already a scientist with a sharp eye for color, texture, and self-expression. Nine years apart in age, they became best friends overnight. At a time when Omer was still figuring out who he was, Rollie became his anchor — offering guidance, honesty, and the kind of chosen family you don’t take for granted.
Over the next 15 years, they built lives, careers, and trust. Omer became a board-certified dermatologist, known for his work with skin of color and his passion for clean clinical care. Rollie became a makeup expert and product thinker, with a rigorous background in bench research and a deep understanding of how makeup could make someone feel like themselves — or finally be seen.
Together, they realized what was missing in the beauty industry: a line that honored both skin health and self-expression, without forcing anyone to choose.
They also knew the industry didn’t need more noise. It needed clarity. Authenticity. And products that could stand up to both clinical scrutiny and creative use. That’s what they set out to create.
Salmalita is the result.
Science and color. Care and creativity. Built by two people who’ve lived the tension between what the world expects and what the soul needs.
Why Salmalita?
The name Salmalita comes from two mothers: Salma and Estrellita. Women who raised, protected, and poured into their children with everything they had. The name honors them, but it also stands for something even larger — for anyone who’s ever carried someone else across the finish line, or picked themselves up when no one else would.
Salmalita means rising through the ashes and shining through the fog. It’s self-protection and self-assurance, even when you have to fake it until it feels real. It’s the love you offer yourself when the world has nothing to give. And it’s the light that shows up anyway.
This brand wasn’t built as a trend. It’s a tribute.
To survival. To softness. To finding joy in skin that has been through things and still glows.
To us, Salmalita is a reminder that beauty isn’t defined by perfection. It’s defined by presence.
It’s what you carry, not what you cover.
The way we see it, beauty isn’t given. It’s reclaimed.
Our Values
We created Salmalita for skin that doesn’t fit neatly into a box — and for people who are tired of pretending they do. Everything we make is rooted in a few core truths:
Less is more, but better.
We believe in skinimalism. Every product should pull its weight — nourishing, protecting, enhancing, never overwhelming. You won’t find a 14-step routine here. Just multitasking formulas that work hard and wear beautifully.
Everyone belongs.
Our products are designed for all skin tones, all skin types, and all genders. Beauty shouldn’t require translation. Whether you wear a full beat or just want a little glow, we’re building for you.
We trust the science — and the soul.
Our formulas are created by dermatologists and backed by real research, but they’re also joyful. Because efficacy matters, and so does how a product makes you feel.
We don’t follow the rules. We write our own.
We’re not here to disrupt for disruption’s sake, but we are questioning what beauty can look like when it starts with care. If that feels a little rebellious, so be it — we think your skin deserves that kind of freedom.
Community matters.
Salmalita was built in conversation with real people. The colors, the names, the textures — all inspired by voices that often go unheard in clinical rooms and beauty boardrooms alike. This isn’t just a brand. It’s a response.
A New Kind of Beauty Brand
Salmalita is more than a makeup line.
It’s a skin movement disguised as color.
Every formula is dermatologist-created, clinically inspired, and designed with care for how real skin lives in the real world. We’re here for your texture, your tone, your melasma, your hyperpigmentation, your glow, your pores, your bare days and bold nights. All of it.
We know your skin doesn’t ask for permission.
It changes. It reacts. It remembers.
And it deserves products that move with it — not work against it.
We built this for the days you want to wear something — and for the days you want to feel everything.
If you’ve ever second-guessed your glow, this is your era.
Welcome to Salmalita.
